How to Cope with Changes in the Organization

Change is one of the constant things in the world. It is inevitable. It is sometimes sad but it can also be fulfilling as it opens different windows of opportunities. This perspective is very dependent on the people’s mindset whether one is a pessimist or an optimist. Changes such as tasks reassignments, change of policies, change of management, etc., as we know it, can be worst or best. Inevitable it may seem, but our emotions are very dependent on our mindset toward those changes. Below are the suggestions on how to cope with it:

1.       Focus your mind on the objective of your work. This is probably one of the hardest things to do after the management breaks the news that major changes will have to take effect immediately. The news may either be a life changing situation for the employees but if you focus your mind on the objective of your work, it will drive you to perform better. You are there to do your job and deliver good results to your manager or leader. If such changes in the workplace are implemented, it is expected of us to work on it, not the job will work for us.

2.       Embrace the change and make it better. There is no other way to cope with these changes except to embrace it. Whether we like it or not, change is part of a growing business and obsolete practices are ousted for modern best practices. Technology is evolving and so do the practices, policies, the hierarchy. If you feel that you cannot cope with it, it is time for you to probably leave but another option is to learn and make it better.

3.       Look for a mentor. Speaking of learning to love and embrace the change, it is great to look for someone who would help you with the new job or tasks. If change means a new role, look for a colleague who has an idea or is knowledgeable about the job and you have to learn from him. This is one way to be effective and efficient. After all, it is another skill set to learn and an additional value for your credentials as an employee.

4.       Open Communication with your leader or the management. This is another major thing to do. Communication is an integral part of personal and professional growth. Changes occur around us and it is right to let people know - especially those who are involved, about how you feel, your motivations, things you need to do, things you need to improve on, and other important factors that are helpful in your job. This way, your manager will have an idea that you are not only responsive to the change but also you are working on it and deliver positive results a possible.

It is normal that we feel anxious after the change in the organization but we can manage our emotions and go with this change. It may be a change of policies like no mobiles allowed during work hours, or no eating in the workstation. It may be a change of tasks or a total revamp of the business cycle. It is always better to assess our workmanship and start asking, Can I pull this off? Can I leave social media behind while at work? Can I work properly without nibbling something crunchy? Do I have the skills to do the job? The above-listed points can be very helpful to cope with the change but at the end of the day, it is us who decide whether to stay or not.
